What are stylescapes and how do they help?

Stylescapes can be a part of the design process, helping a client get a flavour of where the creative direction is heading before a huge amount of time is spent.

So what is a stylescape? It’s a kind of moodboard that gives an early look at colour palettes, typography, overall tone and the design of a few key items. Two or more stylescapes may be presented to give some different possibilities and creative directions for discussion. Once a stylescape is chosen, it becomes the foundation for the creative going forwards.

Why stylescapes are great for clients:

  • It gives an early idea of what you’ll get at the end of the creative process

  • It gives an early say in the design direction, avoiding time and budget being wasted

  • It allows more potential directions to be explored without the time and expense associated with multiple, full design concepts

  • Although colour can be used deliberately and strategically for a brand, there is often a very human, subjective reaction to a new palette when presented. Stylescapes tend to tease out and resolve colour palette discussions early on.

Below are a set of stylescapes I used in a recent branding project. The final concepts were then built on top of the chosen board, utilising the colour palette and font choices used.

Do you have a logo or branding project you’d like to talk about? Tell me what your business is, who’s involved, and how you want it to grow. It’ll be a pleasure to hear from you.
